Bristol exhibitions part one
Last week I went to see the David Hockney exhibition at The Bristol Museum and Galleries.
The exhibition is Hockney's interpretation of William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress.
Hogarth's version is about a young man moving to London and being corrupted by
the many temptations on offer.
As
a parallel Hockney's story unfolds in New York and charts the beginning
of his career,
selling work, earning money, exploring the culture and
the increased sexual
freedom in the early sixties. It shows an
exciting and eye opening time in
his life, which he illustrates
brilliantly in the eight etchings.
Here's a quote from DH himself about the joy of making pictures -
'All of the theory about painting as a flat surface - it's a formalist theory.
I know perfectly well you can go through the surface,
pierce the surface, so to speak, and there discover another world'.
I saw a couple of other great exhibitions last week which I'll post up in the next few days!
